Quinoa plots in 2019 did not show a significant difference in yield for the various stubbles but it was clear that anything with volunteers (canola or quinoa) yielded lower, this is due to no registered herbicides to manage volunteers or weeds in year 2 crop.

Welcome to the 360 tour of the Novel Crop study a.k.a. Introducing High Value Speciality Crops to Western Canadian Crop Rotations.


This project, led by Dr. Jan Slaski from InnoTech Alberta, is looking at the best way to introduce novel crops such as hemp and quinoa into a rotation of staple crops such as wheat, barley, canola and peas. We consider novel crops to be anything that is new to a region, has limited acres, limited agronomy knowledge, often limited registered pesticides, could require specialized equipment, storage and/or processing.


The goal of this project is to generate agronomic data for different regions (southern Alberta, Central Alberta, Peach region and Saskatchewan) that will identify the impacts of novel crops in rotation to diminish the risk of crop failure for producers by generating agronomic data for each of those regions.


Crop residue (last year’s crop) can have a significant impact on the success of the following crop including differences in emergence, ground cover, volunteer crop and weed control issues, herbicide residual carryover, disease implications from host crops, biomass and yield impacts from mycorrhizal effects and nutrient deficiencies to list a few.

Hemp


Plant counts (above are statistically significant) but yield was not. Hemp is a fairly competitive crop once established, plots with lower residue had better establishment and higher plant populations.
